A Palm Coast woman shot a man who forced his way into her home on Big Bear Lane Sunday afternoon and threatened her and her two children, according to the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office. The man was later arrested at a nearby hospital.
At approximately 1:50 p.m., the Flagler County Emergency Communications Center received a call from the homeowner reporting she had shot a man who had entered her home. Deputies arrived within minutes, found blood evidence at the scene, but the man and his vehicle had already left.
How It Unfolded
Detectives determined that the man — identified as Michael McDonald, 33, of Palm Coast — was a former acquaintance of the homeowner. He arrived uninvited and unexpected, first lifting open the garage door, then banging on a back window before entering through the front door.
Once inside, McDonald aggressively confronted the homeowner and her two children in the foyer and made threats. The homeowner repeatedly ordered him to leave and warned him she would shoot. When he continued advancing toward her, she fired one round, striking him in the arm. McDonald then fled in a silver Kia SUV.
The homeowner and her two children were not injured.

Arrest at the Hospital
Deputies located McDonald’s vehicle a short time later at AdventHealth Hospital. They conducted a felony stop and detained him. McDonald was taken inside the hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries before being arrested.
McDonald was charged with burglary with assault and transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he is being held without bond pending arraignment.
His prior criminal history includes arrests for grand theft, possession of controlled substances, resisting, obstruction, possession with intent to sell, DUI, and robbery with a firearm.
Sheriff’s Statement
“Florida is a stand your ground state and when someone invades your home and threatens you and your family, they will likely be shot,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “I strongly support the 2nd Amendment, and this is proof why we have the stand your ground law. This violent re-offender has not learned his lesson. Hopefully, he will now as his bad decision could have cost him his life.”
The investigation remains active and ongoing. Anyone with information is asked to contact the FCSO non-emergency line at 386-313-4911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-277-TIPS (8477).
