Local Scout Troop Gets Behind-the-Scenes Look at Palm Coast Water Facilities

Twenty-three Scouts and parents from Troop 281 recently toured two Palm Coast utility facilities as part of their journey toward earning Eagle Scout rank.

The City of Palm Coast Utility Department hosted the group at Water Treatment Plant 3 and Wastewater Treatment Plant 2. The visit allowed Scouts to complete requirements for their Environmental Science and Sustainability merit badges, both of which are necessary steps on the path to becoming Eagle Scouts.

During the tour, Scouts learned how drinking water is treated before reaching homes and businesses. They also observed how wastewater is safely processed to protect public health and the environment. The experience gave participants a comprehensive view of the city’s utility operations.

City officials intentionally scheduled the tour during winter break to make it easier for students to attend. Troop leaders noted that completing badges of this type often requires traveling long distances, making the local opportunity particularly valuable.

Troop Leader Tracy Rivera expressed enthusiasm about the experience. “The tour your team put on was the best I’ve ever seen,” Rivera said. “Very in-depth, interesting, and a great example of career opportunities.”

Mike Baldwin, the Wastewater Utility Systems Chief Operator, also commented on the visit. “The kids were well behaved and had some good questions,” Baldwin said. “Hopefully, they can all achieve those merit badges and any other goals they have set. Glad they were able to get a full look into the plants with all the sights, sounds, and smells.”

The Palm Coast Utility Department regularly hosts public tours of its water and wastewater facilities.
