Flagler Schools Named Cambridge’s U.S. Small District of the Year for College-Level Coursework at Matanzas High School

Flagler Schools has earned a national honor for its work in delivering college-level coursework to students, with the International Education Group at Cambridge naming the district its U.S. District of the Year in the Small District Division.

The recognition is tied to Matanzas High School’s Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education program, known as AICE. The program has been offered at Matanzas since the 2018-19 school year and is designed as an international pre-university curriculum for academically advanced students. It is a three-year program offering specialized courses built to prepare students for honors degree programs at colleges and universities.

Superintendent LaShakia Moore said the award is a reflection of both the teachers and the students. “This award reflects the dedication of our educators and the ambition of our students,” Moore said. “Programs like Cambridge help our students think deeply, explore new ideas, and graduate ready for the opportunities ahead.”

Matanzas High School Principal Mike Rinaldi pointed to the culture students and teachers have built together as a driving force behind the recognition. “Our Cambridge AICE program challenges students to think critically and push beyond expectations,” Rinaldi said. “We’re proud to see their hard work translate into real opportunities for their future.”

The annual awards from Cambridge recognize school systems that show strong student performance while expanding access to the globally recognized program. Cambridge notes that Flagler Schools has worked to increase participation in rigorous coursework, a notable achievement for a smaller district. Representatives from the International Education Group at Cambridge are scheduled to present the award at the May Matanzas High School Faculty and Staff Meeting.

Cambridge partners with schools across 26 states and territories and currently serves nearly two million students worldwide each year. The organization has more than 160 years of experience in international education and offers coursework that allows students to earn college credit and advanced placement at hundreds of universities, including many of the country’s top institutions.
