City Repertory Theatre Brings Holiday Classic to Palm Coast Stage as 1940s Radio Broadcast

City Repertory Theatre will present “It’s a Wonderful Life” as a live 1940s radio broadcast during the holiday season, offering audiences a nostalgic theatrical experience reimagining the beloved American classic.

The production, running December 5-14, features a small ensemble cast bringing dozens of characters to life as the story of George Bailey unfolds on Christmas Eve. The show is based on “The Greatest Gift” by Philip Van Doren Stern and adapted from the classic film by Joe Landry.

Performances will take place Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. and Sundays at 3:00 p.m. Tickets are available at crtpalmcoast.com or by calling the box office at 386-585-9415.

Cast and Creative Team

City Repertory Theatre Artistic Director John Sbordone directs the production, which stars two returning CRT favorites in the lead roles. Annie Gaybis plays Mary Bailey, while Jack Rose portrays George Bailey. The pair previously appeared together at CRT in “Educating Rita” and last season’s “The Country Girl.” Both actors have extensive professional credits from New York to Los Angeles.

Sonia Pagan-Lopez, recently seen in “Jesus Christ Superstar,” plays multiple characters including Violet. Sbordone performs in the production as Mr. Potter, and Beau Wade serves as the foley artist, joining the other cast members in playing various characters and providing live sound effects throughout the performance.

The radio broadcast format allows the small cast to portray numerous characters while incorporating the sound effects and atmosphere of a 1940s radio show, creating what the theatre describes as a production filled with humor, heart, and hope suitable for all ages.

Anniversary Season Programming

“It’s a Wonderful Life” marks the third show in City Repertory Theatre’s 15th Anniversary Season, which celebrates memorable productions from the company’s history. The show last appeared at CRT in 2012.

The anniversary season lineup includes “Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill,” “The Colored Museum,” “Art,” and a double bill of “Line” and “All in the Timing.” Theatre officials describe the season as an eclectic collection designed to offer something for every audience member.

The production represents the theatre’s effort to provide family-friendly holiday entertainment while maintaining its commitment to diverse theatrical programming throughout its anniversary season. The nostalgic approach of presenting the story as a radio broadcast adds a unique theatrical element that distinguishes this production from traditional stage adaptations of the film.
