The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent murder-suicide after an elderly couple was found dead in their Palm Coast home on Wednesday evening. Deputies responded to a residence on Pinelynn Lane after a relative requested a welfare check. The relative had been unable to reach the couple by phone or text. A neighbor told detectives they last saw the couple leaving for the hospital on Tuesday.
A hospice nurse let deputies into the home, where they found Julio Alonso, 85, and Martha Alonso, 74, dead in their bedroom. Early investigation suggests the husband shot his wife before taking his own life.
“While we are still in the early stages of this investigation, the evidence located inside the home and witness interviews strongly indicate that this is a tragic murder-suicide,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Losing a parent is never easy, but losing both parents to what appears to be a murder-suicide is unimaginable. Our condolences and prayers go out to this couple’s family and friends during this extremely difficult time. May God rest their souls.” The bodies have been taken to the medical examiner’s office.
The Sheriff’s Office Major Case and CSI units continue to investigate. Sheriff Staly and the Sheriff’s Office reminded residents that help is available for those dealing with health issues or feeling overwhelmed. Flagler Cares can be reached at 386-319-9483.
