Flagler County Sheriff’s Weekend Roundup: July 12-13

By-Line: Joseph Bober, Public Information Office, FCSO

Flagler County Sheriff’s Office deputies made five arrests this past weekend between 6 p.m. on Friday, July 11, 2025, and 6 a.m. on Monday, July 14, 2025. Deputies handled 701 calls for service and made 148 traffic stops.

Bunnell Man Arrested After Running from Traffic Stop

On Saturday night, deputies conducted a traffic stop at the intersection of County Road 305 and Clove Avenue in Bunnell when the driver, later identified as Exavier Johnson, 21, of Bunnell, got out of the vehicle and fled on foot. Johnson jumped over a fence leading to a nearby residence and entered a heavily wooded area.

Deputies immediately established a perimeter around the area. Shortly after, they located Johnson walking along Forest Park Street and apprehended him.

When asked why he ran, Johnson told deputies that he knew his license was suspended and he did not want to go to jail again, as the last time he was stopped by law enforcement, he was arrested for driving with a suspended license.

Deputies found two vape pipes in Johnson’s pocket, which were tested and found to contain THC. During a search of the vehicle, deputies located seven more vape pipes containing THC.

Deputies arrested Johnson for driving while his license was suspended, failure to obey a law enforcement officer’s order to stop, resisting arrest without violence, and nine counts of possession of hashish.

“Once again, we had somebody make the dumb decision to run from a traffic stop,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Here’s the lesson: If you run, we’ll find you, catch you, and now go to the Green Roof Inn tired and facing charges for running from law enforcement.”

Johnson was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility, where he was later released on a $2,500 bond.

Palm Coast Man Arrested for Criminal Mischief, Aggravated Assault on Law Enforcement, and Battery on Law Enforcement in Two Separate Incidents

On Sunday evening, deputies responded to a disturbance at the Hampton Inn & Suites in Palm Coast. According to the 911 caller, a guest was attempting to break the window of a second-floor room with a hammer.

Deputies arrived at the hotel and confirmed the subject as Robert Maya, 46, of Palm Coast. Deputies ordered Maya multiple times to open the door of the hotel room, but he refused. When deputies opened the door, Maya threw a large metal object at them, which he had ripped off the wall, nearly hitting two deputies. As deputies took cover, they heard a series of loud popping noises, which they initially believed to be gunshots. Deputies determined the noises were not gunshots but were caused by Maya swinging a metal pole. Deputies ordered Maya to quit resisting, which he did without further incident. Deputies secured Maya and cleared the room, determining there were no other occupants and no firearms present.

Deputies arrested Maya for aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer and criminal mischief (over $1,000). He was transported to the Sheriff Perry Hall Inmate Detention Facility.

Later that night, Maya attacked a detention deputy who was walking him to his cell, striking him in the face and knocking him to the ground. While on the ground, the detention deputy deployed his taser and subdued Maya until other detention deputies arrived.

Maya was additionally arrested for battery on a law enforcement officer. He is being held without bond.

The detention deputy was treated at a local hospital, and he is expected to make a full recovery.

“This guy managed to pull off a rare feat by getting himself arrested at both the Hampton Inn and the Green Roof Inn on the same day,” said Sheriff Staly. “He has no respect for deputies doing their job. This incident shows the dangers deputies face in the field and at the jail. I am thankful that no deputy was seriously injured as a result of this guy’s actions.”
