A pair of documents, a public one by former Flagler County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy Joe Barile and an internal one by Sheriff Rick Staly, cast a much harsher but clearer light on what led to the sudden resignation of Barile last week after less than two years on the job. Barile was about to be fired. He chose the resignation route the sheriff offered, and has signaled his intention to be sheriff one day.
