A black cat that disappeared from North Georgia about two and a half years ago has turned up in Palm Coast, Florida, alive, healthy, and ready to head back to her people this weekend.
Her name is Tracy, and she’s 10. Samantha, her owner, says the family adopted Tracy and her sister, Lily, back in 2017, meant for Samantha and her brother. Tracy, though, picked Samantha early and never really looked back.
“She wasn’t just a pet, she was my best friend,” Samantha said.
In time, Tracy became an indoor-outdoor cat, the kind that made herself part of the daily routine. She’d walk Samantha to the bus stop in the mornings, then tag along on neighborhood strolls as she belonged there.
Then college changed things. In 2024, Samantha left Georgia for Tennessee and couldn’t take Tracy with her. The family chose what felt safest at the time, rehoming Tracy with a trusted friend. Not long after, Tracy slipped out through a door and vanished. The place backed right up to thick woods and a highway. Searches came up empty, and Samantha said she eventually accepted the idea that she might never see her again.
Two and a half years passed. Samantha moved back home to finish school, and that’s when the phone call came. Home Again, the microchip company, reached out and connected the family with Nic, who runs a rescue group called The Dogfather. Tracy had been found in Florida, hundreds of miles away.
“To us, it’s nothing short of a miracle,” Samantha said.
Where Tracy had been, how she got there, what happened in between, those are questions they might never have answered.
Nic’s account starts a week earlier, when a cat showed up at his house and simply stayed. Friendly, hungry, and unwilling to go anywhere.
“It was as if she knew she had found the right place,” he said.
His team took her in and tried to track down an owner, including posting on Facebook, but nothing came back. The first microchip scanner didn’t find a chip, Nic said. A second one did, pulling a chip number. That led him to the chip company, which contacted the registered owner. When the owner answered, he said she was crying. The cat had been missing for two and a half years, gone from North Georgia.
“People know me as The Dogfather, but somehow this little cat found her way to us because she needed help,” Nic said.
He also said he hoped the story would land as a bright spot in a rescue world that often carries heavy news.
“Sometimes the good news deserves the spotlight just as much as the bad,” he said.
They had set a plan: both sides met Saturday at the Florida-Georgia state line, and Tracy finally went home.
“After everything she’s been through, having her back home where she belongs is the greatest gift we could have ever asked for,” Samantha said.
