Point Your Camera West: Flagler County Wants Your Sunset Photos for a Statewide Calendar Contest

Flagler County is asking local photographers to submit sunset images for the Florida Association of Counties 2027 calendar contest, themed “Spectacular Sunsets.”

The county announced the call for entries on July 22. Photographers have until Monday, Aug. 17, to send in their work.

How it works

Flagler County will collect the photos and submit them to the Florida Association of Counties (FAC) on behalf of the photographers. Winning photographers are given credit for their images in the calendar.

There is no cash prize. The county described the contest as a bragging-rights competition.

Interim County Administrator Adam Mengel said photographers who win may still receive something.

“In the past when we’ve had a winning entry, FAC provided us with additional copies,” Mengel said. “I fully expect that we will be able to provide calendars to the winning photographer.”

Mengel also encouraged residents to enter.

“This is a great theme for amateur and professional photographers alike to show off their talents as they capture the beauty of Flagler County,” Mengel said. “Flagler County is fortunate to have a large pool of talented photographers who graciously share their work with us for consideration in the contest. Flagler County has had winning submissions for three out of the last four. We are ready to shine on and greatly appreciate your participation.”

The FAC website describes what the organization is looking for: “We’re looking for images that showcase the vibrant colors and serene landscapes that make our state’s horizon unforgettable. From glowing coastal horizons to quiet, rural sunsets we welcome submissions from all 67 counties.”

Entry requirements

  • The theme is “Spectacular Sunsets.”
  • Photos must be shot in Flagler County. Identifying the location is helpful.
  • Images must be at least 2,500 pixels at 300 DPI. Photos may be cropped.
  • Photos with logos, names, time and date stamps, or watermarks will not be accepted.
  • Photos cannot be altered using artificial intelligence, or used to copy or generate another artist’s work. Basic editing tools such as Photoshop or Lightroom may be used for minor changes like cropping, brightness and contrast adjustments, or color correction — but not to significantly change the content or authenticity of the original image.
  • The county deadline is Monday, Aug. 17, so staff have time to prepare and send in the images.
  • Entries go to jmurphy@flaglercounty.gov.

Rights and permissions

By submitting a photo, the photographer confirms they hold all rights and permissions to the image, including for the likenesses of any identifiable people in it. Submitting also allows Flagler County to enter the photo in the 2027 FAC contest and to use it for other county purposes, none of which are for profit.

The county asks that submissions include this statement:

“I, (full name), hereby certify that the attached photo is the ORIGINAL WORK of the entrant. It is also understood that Flagler County will have the right to reproduce, publish and/or exhibit the work in any format, including newspapers, brochures, the county website, or Facebook and other social media pages. It is further understood that Flagler County assumes no responsibility or liability for any submitted work.”

Submitters also agree to indemnify and hold harmless FAC and its agents and assigns from any claim, including breach of copyright, related to FAC’s use of the photographs.
