Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Ramps Up Patrols and DUI Enforcement for Super Bowl Weekend

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is increasing its presence on roadways, in neighborhoods, and near businesses throughout Super Bowl weekend to keep residents and visitors safe during one of the busiest days of the year.

Sheriff Rick Staly announced the enhanced patrols ahead of what is traditionally the most-watched sporting event in the United States. Officials expect Super Bowl Sunday to bring congested roads and large crowds to area businesses and restaurants, along with increased potential for crimes of opportunity.

The sheriff urged the public to take precautions against theft while out celebrating. “Don’t become a target for criminals this weekend. Always lock your car doors and never leave valuables in plain view. Store them out of sight in your trunk until you reach your destination,” Staly said.

With emotions running high among fans of both teams, the sheriff also called for patience on the roads. “Emotions will be running high for fans of both the winning and losing teams after the big game, so slow down, use extra caution, and keep your eyes on the road. Don’t drive distracted. It can wait,” he said.

Beyond standard patrols, the Sheriff’s Office will deploy dedicated DUI enforcement teams specifically aimed at deterring impaired and aggressive driving and preventing crashes.

Staly warned that alcohol consumption typically increases during major sporting events, raising the risk of dangerous decisions. “Alcohol tends to flow quite freely during large sporting events and with it an increased risk of poor decisions that lead to DUIs, traffic crashes, and fatalities. If you choose to drink and get behind the wheel, it could have life-altering consequences,” he said.

The sheriff encouraged those who plan to drink to arrange alternative transportation. “If you plan to drink, don’t drive. Plan ahead and have a designated driver or use a rideshare service; otherwise, you’ll be seeing new bars at the Green Roof Inn,” Staly said, referencing the local jail.

The Sheriff’s Office will also place educational displays around the county to remind drivers of the consequences of impaired driving. The FCSO “Taxi-Patrol” car will be parked along State Road 100 in Palm Coast as a visual reminder that drunk driving can result in a trip to the county jail. Message boards on multiple roadways will display the reminder to “Arrive Alive.”
