Flagler County Sheriff’s Office Mourns Death of 2-Year-Old K-9 Kyro

German Shepherd dies from unknown medical issue while in climate-controlled patrol vehicle

The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office announced the death of K-9 Kyro on October 14, 2025, following an unexpected medical emergency. The 2-year-old German Shepherd served as a dual-purpose patrol and narcotics detection dog.

The Incident

On the afternoon of October 14, Master Deputy Marcus Dawson, Kyro’s handler, was supervising the training of a new K-9 team. Kyro remained inside Dawson’s patrol vehicle, which was equipped with a functioning air conditioning system and a heat alarm designed to alert the handler in the event of mechanical problems.

During a routine break, Dawson returned to his vehicle and discovered Kyro unresponsive. All protective systems for the K-9 and vehicle were operational at the time.

Dawson immediately transported Kyro to an emergency veterinary clinic, where staff performed lifesaving measures. Despite their efforts, Kyro died from an unknown medical condition.

Investigation Underway

The Sheriff’s Office is investigating the circumstances of Kyro’s death. A necropsy (an animal autopsy) will be conducted to determine the exact cause of the medical issue. All FCSO K-9s receive regular veterinary checkups as part of the agency’s standard care protocol.

“We are deeply heartbroken by K-9 Kyro’s passing,” said Sheriff Rick Staly. “Our K-9s are not just working dogs; they’re trusted partners to their handlers and beloved members of our Sheriff’s Office family. I ask everyone to keep Master Deputy Dawson and everyone at FCSO in your thoughts and prayers.”

Service Record

Kyro was born on December 13, 2022, and joined the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office in August 2024. During his brief but productive career, the German Shepherd achieved notable results:

  • Assisted in arresting 37 suspects
  • Helped detect and seize 65 grams of illegal narcotics
  • Located 25 items of drug paraphernalia

His training covered both patrol work and narcotics detection, making him a versatile member of the K-9 unit.

“K-9 Kyro’s dedication and loyalty exemplified the very best of public service,” Staly said. “As we mourn this tremendous loss, I ask that our community join us in honoring his memory and selfless service to the residents of Flagler County.”

The Sheriff’s Office will announce funeral arrangements and additional details when they become available. Police K-9s typically receive formal memorial services recognizing their contributions to law enforcement and public safety.
